Easiest DIY Wax Melt Recipes

Creating home aromas is cheap, easy, and super fun! With so many choices of fragrances to choose from with ready-made wax melts, sometimes the best option is to put your creativity to the test and encapsulate some of your favourite scents at home.

Here we look at the five easiest DIY wax melt recipes for you to try and home and make your space smell heavenly!

What Are Wax Melts?

Wax melts are wickless scented pieces of wax generally either soy or paraffin that are designed to create warm, sweet-smelling aromas at home or in in-door environments.

How they work is a wax melt (which is often the size and shape of a piece of candy) is placed into a burner (which can be made from ceramic, or can be electrical) and heat is gently applied to the wax to melt it, which then emits a fragrance into the atmosphere.

If you choose to use a ceramic burner, you will need tealight candles to apply the heat to the wax.

Making Wax Melts at Home: What You’ll Need

Making Wax Melts at Home

There are a few tools and ingredients you’ll need to make some fragrant wax melts from the comfort of your own home. These are:

  • Wax. Either soy or paraffin is fine.
  • Moulds. These can be silicone candy moulds, or something of a similar size.
  • Essential oils or fragrance oils of choice.
  • Colouring. Candle dye ( this is not something you have to include)

How to Make Wax Melts at Home

  • Create a bain-marie/double boiler by placing a glass Pyrex container or heatproof bowl inside a pot filled with circa 2 inches of water. Be sure the water can’t splash into the container.
  • Put the wax of choice in the top of your double boiler and bring the water to a simmer.
  • Gently melt the wax . Keep stirring the mix. When fully melted, remove from the heat.
  • Add essential oils and candle dye, and then stir. Immediately pour the mix into moulds. Allow to cool at least an hour. When fully cool, remove the wax melts out of the moulds and store in a cool, dry place. If you struggle to remove the wax without breaking/warping it, pop them into the freezer for 20-30 minutes to harden further.

So, now you’ve got your ingredients and instructions, it’s time to select some delectable scents to work with. Obviously, you will have your own personal preferences of home aromas, but below are a few ideas to whet that creative appetite!
